Thursday’s US initial unemployment claims were expected to remain well behaved by forecasters that use the Interactive Brokers prediction market to express their economic views. Indeed, the odds on the preceding Wednesday favored a statistic between 210k and 220k for the contract expiring on Thursday, which would land the indicator in the healthy zone that signals ongoing expansions in business activity. There’s was a 72% chance of a figure above 210k and a 59% probability of a number that fails to exceed 220k. Additionally, the chances of a big beat signaling massive layoffs were low, considering subdued 9% and 3% likelihoods of results exceeding 230k or 240k, respectively.

Growth to Accelerate Meanwhile

The year-to-date average of the Dallas Fed’s Weekly Economic Index was 2.46% as of Wednesday, stronger than 2025’s mean of 2.34%, indicating that a cyclical reacceleration could very well be on its way. Forecasters on Wednesday expected the strength of the past three weeks, which delivered figures of 2.65%, 2.87% and 2.65%, to continue meanwhile as the likelihood of a figure on Thursday exceeding 2.4% was at an elevated 64%.
