US Initial Claims Were Expected To Be Around 200K, With That “Yes” Costing $0.56: Oct. 7, 2026

Thursday’s US initial unemployment claims report was expected to reflect continuing labor market stability.  Layoff appetites have continued to be suppressed, and last Thursday’s 197k print was emblematic of heavy demand for workers. Additionally, the four-week average has declined in the last four consecutive prints to only 200k, illustrating the job market’s longer-term strength.  Meanwhile, the weekly Reuters poll of 33 forecasters on Wednesday had a median estimate of 200k, amidst minimum and maximum projections of 200k and 211k. In the Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets, however, the “Yes” contracts thresholds of at least 195k, 200k, 205k, 210k and 215k on Wednesday were going for $0.96, $0.56, $0.48, $0.16 and $0.04.
