Investors Expected Payroll Recovery as 40k “Yes” Was Priced At $0.52: Sep. 3, 2026

Investors on Thursday expected to see nonfarm payrolls recover when the data was released on the following day after last month’s had the second negative number of the year, coming in at -23k. The consensus estimate on Thursday was at 56k against the backdrop of a wide range of possible outcomes. The dynamic is reasonable when considering that the volatility and relative deviation of this indicator are historically elevated. The Reuters poll of 70 forecasters spanned from a minimum projection of -25k to a maximum of 121k, reflecting a potential surprise. The Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets, furthermore, had the “Yes” contracts with thresholds of 30k, 40k, 50k, 100k and 150k going for $0.58, $0.52, $0.45, $0.13 and $0.02 on Thursday.  I think we’ll see a statistic below 0 based on my anticipation of -25k, so I favor the lower “Nos.”

6.4% Unemployment Expected For Canada Canada’s unemployment rate was expected to remain unchanged at a two-year low of 6.4%, but this indicator has a tendency to move around substantially, and I believe there’s a higher chance of an upside surprise than a downside miss. However, the $0.64 “Yes” contract pricing at the 6.4% threshold within the Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets was already fully valued, in my opinion, as it appeared the majority of participants agreed with my viewpoint because if they didn’t, the cost would likely been closer to $0.50. The 18 forecasters surveyed in the monthly Reuters poll saw a narrow range of potential outcomes, with the minimum and maximum projections near each other at 6
