If you’ve been curious about using AI with your trading workflow, Interactive Brokers just made it a lot easier. There’s no coding, no API setup, and no extra accounts required. Instead, Interactive Broker’s clients can now connect directly to Claude AI and ChatGPT through a certified connector—and be up and running in minutes.
Here’s how it works.
Connecting Your Account—In Minutes
The integration is built directly into Claude’s and ChatGPT’s certified connector marketplace.
Claude
- Click on the Customize icon in Claude
- Click on “Connect your apps”
- Search and select Interactive Brokers as a connector
- Log in using your existing IBKR credentials
- Read the disclosures and when ready approve the connection
ChatGPT
- Click on the Apps icon in ChatGPT
- Search and select Interactive Brokers as a connector
- Log in using your existing IBKR credentials
- Read the disclosures and when ready approve the connection
That’s it. There’s no need to generate API keys, install software, or fund a separate account. The entire setup is designed to be fast and familiar—more like linking a financial app than building a trading system.
What the Connector Actually Does
Once connected, Claude and ChatGPT can securely access your Interactive Broker’s account data through the same infrastructure behind IBKR’s APIs—but without exposing your credentials.
In practice, that means you can ask questions like:
- “What are my current positions and P&L?”
- “How much exposure do I have to technology stocks?”
- “Show my recent trades and open orders”
Claude and ChatGPT pull in real account data—positions, balances, trade history, margin, and market data—and returns answers in plain English.
From Insights to Trade Ideas
Beyond analysis, Claude and ChatGPT can also help you take the next step—turning insights into potential trades.
For example, you might ask:
- “What would I need to sell to reduce tech exposure to 10%?”
- “Identify my biggest loser and suggest a rebalance”
- “Create a limit order to buy 100 shares of XYZ at $50”
Claude and ChatGPT can generate structured trade instructions based on your request, using your account data as context.
Human-in-the-Loop Execution
One of the most important design features here is control.
Claude and ChatGPT do not place trades directly. Instead:
- Trade instructions appear in the AI Instructions tab within the trading platform
- The investor reviews, edits in the order entry area, or discards them
- Only approved instructions are submitted as live orders
This “human-in-the-middle” approach ensures that the investor stays in charge of every decision, while still benefiting from AI-driven analysis and suggestions.
What You Can Do Today
At launch, the integration supports:
- Equities and ETFs
- Market and limit orders
But the bigger story is the workflow shift. You’re no longer navigating menus or exporting data—you’re interacting with your portfolio conversationally, asking questions and refining ideas in real time.
Final Thoughts
For many traders, the hardest part of using AI has been the setup. That hurdle is now largely gone.
By embedding Interactive Brokers directly into Claude and ChatGPT through a secure connector, the process becomes simple: connect, ask, analyze, and decide. No code required.
As always, AI is best used as a tool—not a replacement. But when paired with the investor’s own judgment, it can be a powerful way to surface insights, test ideas, and streamline their trading workflow.
