WTI crude dipped to $92.71 a barrel while Atlas Energy Solutions jumped on data-center deals with a frontier AI lab.

What’s going on here?

Energy stocks slid ahead of Friday’s open as oil and natural gas prices pulled back, even as Atlas Energy Solutions jumped after signing new data-center deals with a frontier AI lab.

What does this mean?

The pullback showed up quickly in broad energy exposure: WTI crude slipped 2% to $92.71 a barrel and natural gas futures fell 3.6% to $3.18. Products designed to track those commodities moved even more. Meanwhile, company news added its own cross-currents: Colombia’s state-controlled oil producer Ecopetrol fell after naming Joaquin Gutierrez Caballero CEO, and France’s TotalEnergies dipped after backing a plan to renew CEO Patrick Pouyanne’s mandate at a future shareholder vote. Atlas went the other way because its contracts were tied to specific data-center projects, a reminder that AI-related infrastructure spending can lift energy-adjacent firms even on a weak day for the underlying fuels.

Why should I care?

For you:

An “oil ETF” can lag or lead the commodity on a given day, and these funds can behave differently than people expect when they use them as quick stand-ins for energy prices.
