Both he and his family are deeply attached to her, as the pictures here attest. However, there are\u00a0<em>some things<\/em>\u00a0he will draw a line at. One of them is the increasing humanisation of animals. Not everyone would agree. The longevity trend we discussed\u00a0last year (and initially in\u00a02019) is now coming for your cat, dog and budgie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pet industry has been on a journey of both premiumisation and digitalisation for\u00a0some time.\u00a0<strong>Americans will likely spend a record-breaking $165bn on their pets this year<\/strong>, a 4.4% increase\u00a0relative to 2025. Notably, Gen-Z pet-owners spend an average of $6,100 annually on their animals, versus the roughly $5,200 allocated by Millennials, or the much stingier $3,900 disbursed by members of Gen-X (your author falls into this latter category).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where does all the money go? Food price inflation has hit the pet industry, but\u00a0<strong>increasing sums are being spent on predictive and preventive healthcare solutions<\/strong>. Some of this is clearly because people want to enjoy more quality time with their pets. Equally important may be economics. One survey suggests that\u00a0<strong>at least 50% of pet owners are actively researching ways to avoid emergency veterinary bills<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 which have a horrible tendency of being very expensive \u2013 through earlier intervention and prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not be surprised, then, to see<strong>\u00a0animals wearing biometrics monitors<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>DNA testing<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>gut microbiome and food sensitivity analytics<\/strong>, and multiple\u00a0<strong>supplements\u00a0<\/strong>all might form part of the pet longevity tool kit too. Another recent\u00a0report suggests that some owners are using\u00a0<strong>peptides<\/strong>\u00a0in the hope of extending pet lifespans. Others are favouring\u00a0<strong>rapamycin<\/strong>\u00a0(an immunosuppressant thought to have anti-ageing properties) and even\u00a0<strong>infra-red light therapy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prospect of longer life has always been a tantalising one, but it may be both na\u00efve and hubristic to assume that we can defeat death.&nbsp;<em>Something&nbsp;<\/em>will kill you \u2013 and your animal \u2013 eventually. Natural selection has no interest in longevity per se. Further,<strong>&nbsp;we still don\u2019t fully understand how or why the body ages<\/strong>.
