A rebound in oil prices alongside rising interest rates is signaling risk in the Middle East situation while the Iran and Oman agreement established Wednesday is vague and fails to address US terms. President Trump and his cabinet have claimed that a reopening of the critical waterway is around the corner; however, market participants are running out of patience. Still, robust earnings accompanied by healthy economic data have kept shareholders motivated to stay invested, and good examples of the beneficial cyclical backdrop from this morning include the following:

• A reduction in job cuts

• Better-than-anticipated initial unemployment claims

• A big beat on productivity

But this positive momentum is pushing up borrowing costs and the greenback, although to a much lesser extent than complicated foreign affairs that are raising inflation expectations while triggering losses to Treasuries and stocks. Equities are suffering from another U-turn after hitting record highs yesterday before finishing in the red. Furthermore, today’s modest drop is broad, with only energy and communication services being the only categories among the 11 principal sectors to advance while all four of the major domestic benchmarks are sinking. The Dow is leading the way south. Tech is also weaker because Alphabet’s debt offering has sparked new debates concerning existing appetites for absorbing more incremental paper considering uncertain return prospects amidst elevated expenses. Elsewhere, commodities minus crude are dropping, volatility protection instruments are nearly flat.

Claims Continue to Depict Tightness

Unemployment data continues to depict a tight labor market with employers refraining from firing. First-time and continuing applications totaled 199k and 1.8 million during the seven-day periods ending on August 1 for the former and July 25 for the latter. The initial claims level was better than the expectation for 203k, but the continuing category exceeded the estimate for 1.79 million. On an encouraging note, both metrics were near last week’s subdued revised numbers of 198k for initial filings and 1.777 million for continuing. Four-week moving averages dipped to 198.75k for initial and 1.791million for continuing from 203.25k and 1.797 million.

Firings Sink to Two-Year Low

Challenger, Gray and Christmas reported this morning that employers cut only 33.4k jobs in July, a 24-month low. The metric is down a considerable 27% month over month (m/m) and 46% year over year (y/y). Payroll reductions continued to be driven by the tech sector, which is changing fundamentally because of significant AI investments. Hiring prospects were buoyant, however, as other industries have yet to fully embrace replacing humans with the modern technology, generally speaking. Indeed, plans to add employees jumped 47% m/m and over 400% y/y.

Productivity Beats

In another positive development this morning, second-quarter productivity expanded at the fastest pace since the fourth quarter. Nonfarm productivity rose 1.4% quarter over quarter (q/q) on an annualized basis, higher than the 0.6% estimate and the previous quarter’s 0.8%. Improved efficiencies put downward pressure on inflation by alleviating margin pressures on companies through higher output per employee that translates to expanding revenues.

Jobs Friday Could Drive New Records

Jobs Friday could drive new records for stocks if the statistics are accompanied by favorable news on the geopolitical front. As for the numbers themselves, I’m expecting to see the fourth consecutive month of decelerating hiring as my estimate for the July headline stands at 40k. The labor market has been challenged by supply constraints, as plunging participation coincides with a shrinking workforce and stronger wage pressures as a result. Still, a weaker top-line figure will be enough to spark rallies in Treasuries even if it’s paired with subdued unemployment, because slowdown risk would begin to make its way onto the curve if fixed-income investors fear that rosters could start contracting. Furthermore, stronger productivity, like in the report we saw this morning, could blunt the inflationary effects of rising compensation expenses, as greater output offsets heavier salary bills and neutralizes margins. But with the Middle East situation dominating the conversation, US-Iran communication will be top of mind for Wall Street irrespective of the results from the government’s nonfarm payrolls print.

International Roundup

Australia Posts Surprise June Trade Surplus

Australia produced a trade surplus of A$1.929 billion in June with a surge of non-monetary gold exports helping the country bounce back from May’s A$2.367 billion deficit, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Economists anticipated a June deficit of A$1.06 billion.

Exports climbed 9.6% m/m, a sharp reversal from the 7.6% m/m decline in May. Imports, furthermore, were down 0.2% m/m after climbing 0.9% in the preceding period. Shipments to other countries were led by non-monetary gold, which soared 60% m/m. The trading of the precious metal is volatile due to changes in global gold prices. Metal ores and minerals were also strong, with shipments abroad climbing 6.2% and helping the broad non-rural goods category to advance 4.9% m/m.

The overall surplus was limited modestly by the rural goods category, which experienced a 1.9% m/m drop in shipments to foreign customers. Within this classification, meat and meat preparations fell 5.9% m/m.

Import weakness was the most noticeable with automated data processing equipment, which fell 24.3%, and civil aircraft and confidentialised items, which sank 35.3%. Those items and the 15.3% drop in industrial transport equipment caused imports of the broader capital goods category to fall 4.5% m/m.

Retail Sales Soften in Europe

Euro area retail sales sank 0.3% m/m and were up only 0.7% from the year-ago period, according to Eurostat. Economists anticipated 0.1% and 1% m/m and y/y increases after the two metrics were up 0.4% and 1.9% in May.

The m/m decline was caused by sales heading south 0.5% and 0.4% for the food, drinks and tobacco group and the non-food products except automotive fuel category. Automotive fuel at specialized stores bucked the broader trend with a 1.5% m/m increase. Finland, Romania and Germany were the most significant laggards with sales sinking 1.5%, 1.2% and 1.1%. On the flip side, sales climbed 2.5%, 1.7%, 1.5% and 1.5% in Luxembourg, Portugal, Croatia and Sweden.

<p
