At a $4.9 trillion market cap, it briefly overtook<strong> Nvidia<\/strong> as the world\u2019s most valuable company on Friday as the AI boom lost some of its steam. Nvidia later regained the lead, and the two companies are now racing neck-and-neck for the crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The twist is that Apple has spent much of the past decade being accused of moving sluggishly: cautious on launching genuinely new products, slow on revamping Siri, and largely ignoring generative AI. In the tech space, it sticks out like the antithesis of the AI darling Nvidia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this, Apple shares have <strong>skyrocketed nearly 2,500%<\/strong> since outgoing CEO <strong>Tim Cook<\/strong> started at the job in 2011. This is usually attributed to Cook\u2019s operational discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Cook\u2019s Apple has another superpower: <strong>cash<\/strong>. In 2012, less than a year after he took the helm, Apple announced its first share repurchase plan and reintroduced dividends after a 17-year hiatus. Since then, the buyback program has grown into a leviathan. By the end of the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, Apple had bought <strong>$840 billion of its own shares<\/strong>, according to company filings. This compares with $181 billion of dividend payouts during the same period. The Apple board has approved another $100 billion for future repurchases. Other companies, including Nvidia, are also doing major buyback programs, but Apple is in a league of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It plans relatively modest $14 billion of capital expenditures this year. Meanwhile, AI-heavy giants <strong>Microsoft<\/strong>, <strong>Alphabet<\/strong>, <strong>Amazon<\/strong>, and <strong>Meta<\/strong> expect to splurge together more than $700 billion into data centers, servers, and advanced AI chips this year. Global buybacks hit a record of <strong>$1.5 trillion in 2025<\/strong>, exceeding dividends in value in some markets, such as the US.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firms like them because:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No commitment to regular cash payments\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They can boost <strong>per<\/strong>\u2011<strong>share metrics<\/strong> like EPS without having to grow the business\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some countries, gains may be <strong>taxed later<\/strong> than dividends<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Share-Buybacks-3-Campus-1100x614.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-215857 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1100px; aspect-ratio: 1100\/614;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the Catch?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies can overspend on buybacks, neglecting growth investments. And if they borrow to fund repurchases, it adds risk.
