The\u00a0\u00a0<em>Why We Die<\/em>\u00a0by Nobel Prize winner Venki Ramakrishnan provides many useful perspectives on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core, Ramakrishnan\u2019s thesis is both sobering and strangely reassuring:\u00a0<strong>ageing is not a problem to be \u2018solved\u2019 in the conventional sense<\/strong>, but rather a by-product of how evolution has optimised life. Biology prioritises reproduction and early survival,\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0long-term maintenance. Over time, the body accumulates damage at the molecular and cellular level, and the systems responsible for repair and renewal themselves degrade. In other words,\u00a0<strong>death is not a failure of the system, but an inevitable feature of it<\/strong>. This stands\u00a0<em>in contrast<\/em>\u00a0to some of the more bullish narratives\u00a0around radical life extension that have recently grown in prominence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet this does not imply that nothing can be done. Quite the opposite. Ramakrishnan highlights that while there may be no single silver bullet,&nbsp;<strong>incremental advances in understanding biology are already delivering meaningful improvements in healthspan rather than lifespan<\/strong>. This aligns with our thesis that longevity is&nbsp;<em>less<\/em>&nbsp;about living forever and&nbsp;<em>more<\/em>&nbsp;about&nbsp;<strong>living better for longer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the book injects a note of caution into some of the more speculative corners of the theme.&nbsp;<strong>The complexity of human biology should not be underestimated<\/strong>. Interventions that target one pathway may create unintended consequences elsewhere.&nbsp;<strong>Moreover, there are important societal questions: what would materially longer lives mean for intergenerational equity, resource allocation and inequality?<\/strong>&nbsp;Technological improvement does not exist in a vacuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately,&nbsp;<em>Why We Die<\/em>&nbsp;reinforces the idea that the longevity theme is both powerful and nuanced.&nbsp;<strong>Progress is real, but likely to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary<\/strong>. As with many of the other themes we track, the winners may emerge not from those promising the most dramatic breakthroughs, but from those building the infrastructure \u2013 diagnostics, therapeutics and data \u2013 that enable better outcomes. Death, it seems, remains undefeated for now.
