For a dose of what Amazon calls \u201cscience-based magic\u201d, a visit to the\u00a0AWS Summit London<\/a>\u00a0is a necessity. When launched a decade ago, 3,000 people attended. Now, the annual event attracts over 20,000 visitors, your author included. While the summit clearly serves as a promotional platform for Amazon, it also functions as\u00a0a barometer for progress across the technology landscape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event\u2019s keynote was titled \u201cthe age of agents.\u201d Its core conclusion:\u00a0agents will augment humans rather than replace them<\/strong>. As a result, the debate is shifting away from humans versus machines and towards how the combination of the two can drive better outcomes.\u00a0Technology is \u201ca new form of human agency\u201d<\/strong>, according to speakers at the event. In this world view, \u201cyou are the agent of your imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple presenters provided support for this argument. Amazon highlighted how agents had accelerated product build speeds by a factor of at least four<\/strong> in some cases (relative to a pre-agentic world). One programmer said they have shipped more code in the last five months compared to the prior ten years. Businesses as diverse as 3M, AstraZeneca, Experian, Evri and Octopus Energy are already on the agentic bandwagon and seeing clear improvements in outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most crucially, the full benefits of using AI (agents) are still to come. Although a new UK business is adopting AI every 40 seconds, according to Amazon, over a third of companies have yet to engage at all<\/strong>. Further, fewer than 25% are using AI \u201cat its most advanced level.\u201d Most are still experimenting. The AI, cloud and data centre boom still has a long way to run from here<\/strong>. Or, as one Amazon speaker at the event put it, \u201cwhy accept the limitations of today\u2026[when you can have] complete reimagination?\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
