Now, in this case, assuming you had some way to predict that, you\u2019d think about buying it ahead of him. And then the selling it to him towards the end of his buy program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you have seen this coming, others will have seen it coming, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you think this guy is about to start buying, and you\u2019re right, you\u2019ll see other traders rush to buy cheap too, in anticipation of selling to this guy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competition and Market Efficiency<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This will tend to push price up such that the expected impact of our maniac\u2019s buying gets incorporated into the price very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This competition is why the market is so efficient.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s why the existence of crazy price-insensitive traders isn\u2019t enough for us to have an edge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We might know this guy is willing to trade at bad prices, but that doesn\u2019t mean that we<\/em><\/strong> are the ones who get to trade with him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trading with him is a competitive business.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s highly <\/em><\/strong>competitive when we\u2019re right about the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that this aggressive competition makes market pricing very efficient. So, in a liquid market, it\u2019s hard to trade at bad prices, even if you\u2019re trading without an edge. You get to trade at prices set by the most informed players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginner Trading Tips: Look for Less Competitive Games<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This implies that the part-time independent trader, who is constrained in myriad ways compared to the big, well-capitalised professional teams, should seek out the places where there\u2019s the least competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we do that by looking for \u201cwin-win\u201d games<\/em><\/strong> where there isn\u2019t really any <\/em><\/strong>competition. For example, risk assets tend to always be cheap on average compared to their expected total returns \u2013 we can take advantage of this risk premium<\/a> without really eating anyone else\u2019s lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we also do it by looking for games like this trade-with-the-maniac game that are unattractive <\/em><\/strong>to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, in this case, we\u2019d like fewer people here trying to play this game so we can still get a piece of it even if we\u2019re not the quickest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for people to not <\/em><\/strong>be interested, the opportunity needs to be unattractive<\/em><\/strong> in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t ever get too impressed with yourself and think you\u2019ve found something nobody else knows about\u2026 that\u2019s unlikely. You want to know what sucks about it and be prepared to accept and manage that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there will always<\/em><\/strong> be something that sucks about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, maybe this is a micro-cap stock that few are willing to pay attention to because the risk is high and the opportunities are relatively small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe this maniac guy\u2019s buying is a pretty random, hard-to-predict thing \u2013 so the trade is quite noisy. Subject to a lot of luck. So it\u2019s not a good use of risk capital for smart money vs other less noisy trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want these things to be unattractive and uncompetitive.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
