The slide followed news from the Energy Information Administration that gas storage jumped by 90 billion cubic feet last week \u2013 easily topping the 80 bcf analysts were looking for. That brings total reserves to 3.43 trillion cubic feet, or 6.3% above the five-year seasonal average. Even though the National Weather Service is predicting warmer-than-normal temperatures, which usually boosts demand for cooling, the upcoming autumn &#8216;shoulder season&#8217; means energy use typically drops off \u2013 and that\u2019s keeping sellers in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-for-markets-nbsp-surplus-supplies-take-the-edge-off-prices\"><strong><em>For markets:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Surplus supplies take the edge off prices.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>High storage levels are keeping a lid on natural gas prices, even with hotter weather threatening short-term demand spikes. With inventories well above average, traders aren\u2019t betting on a big turnaround anytime soon.
