It\u2019s made up of seven members that are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate to serve 14-year terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-federal-reserve-banks\"><strong><a><\/a>What are the Federal Reserve banks?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12 regional Federal Reserve banks implement Fed policy and ensure the financial system runs smoothly by enforcing regulations and lending to commercial banks to keep the system liquid. They also pull together local information that\u2019s used for broader monetary decisions.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invesco.com\/us\/en\/insights\/what-is-federal-reserve-inflation.html#5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-federal-open-market-committee\"><strong><a><\/a>What is the Federal Open Market Committee?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12 voting members of the Federal Open Market Committee decide the country\u2019s monetary policy, including setting the federal funds rate, and control the nation\u2019s money supply by buying and selling securities.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invesco.com\/us\/en\/insights\/what-is-federal-reserve-inflation.html#6\">6<\/a><\/sup> The FOMC&nbsp;meets eight times a year to make policy decisions. It\u2019s composed of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System as well as the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York plus four other Reserve Bank presidents who rotate each year. These projections are compiled into a series of charts and graphs showing their composite projections on changes in gross domestic product (GDP), the unemployment rate, and inflation. One of these charts shows the federal funds rate that each participant believes will lead to the right level of employment and price stability \u2014 in other words, each individual FOMC member\u2019s \u201cpolicy prescription.\u201d Those rates are plotted with a series of dots, earning it the nickname \u201cdot plot.\u201d<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invesco.com\/us\/en\/insights\/what-is-federal-reserve-inflation.html#8\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-fed-s-summary-of-commentary-on-current-economic-conditions\"><strong><a><\/a>What is the Fed\u2019s Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each Federal Reserve bank keeps contact with members of the business community in their respective regions \u2014 from business leaders to market experts to economists \u2014 to take their temperature on current local conditions. They also receive insights from community organizations, in an effort to understand diverse viewpoints on the economy, as well as district banks.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invesco.com\/us\/en\/insights\/what-is-federal-reserve-inflation.html#9\">9<\/a> <\/sup>All this anecdotal analysis is compiled in the Fed\u2019s Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions, which is released two weeks ahead of each FOMC meeting. This quarterly survey can provide a better understanding of the country\u2019s credit and lending markets and can help inform interest rate decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-nowcasts\"><a><\/a>What are nowcasts?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some economic indicators are published with a significant lag. Nowcasts use models to estimate where these indicators currently stand based on available data. They aren\u2019t official forecasts, and they change as new data is released. Examples include the Atlanta Fed\u2019s GDPNow estimate of gross domestic product and the Cleveland Fed\u2019s daily nowcasts of inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-monetary-policy-terms\"><strong><a><\/a>Key monetary policy terms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tightening\">Tightening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tightening monetary policy includes actions by a central bank to increase the cost of borrowing with the goal of curbing inflation or preventing imbalances in the economy.
