After a scorcher from that pesky heat dome last week across the Midwest and Northeast, movie theaters yearn for your arrival. The second half of the year is filled with potential blockbusters, but the big screen remains a show-me story, and the weather plays a leading role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recall that the Memorial Day weekend was a record-setter, due in part to unusually cold and rainy conditions along the I-95 corridor. Ticket revenue tallied an estimated $326 million.<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;The numbers were so impressive that shares of AMC (AMC), Marcus Corporation (MCS), and Cinemark (CNK) were given a standing ovation from Wall Street the following Tuesday. Moviegoer volume has not been all that stirring since that weekend, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 Hollywood box office has indeed been a rollercoaster ride. There have been smashes and flops, but all told, the first half tracks about on par with what we\u2019ve seen in the post-pandemic era. At $3.9 billion through June 26, it\u2019s a solid showing, a modest bust from \u201cMission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning\u201d notwithstanding.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2025-tracking-16-above-last-year-s-us-box-office-gross-ahead-of-the-fourth-of-july-weekend\"><strong>2025 Tracking 16% Above Last Year\u2019s US Box Office Gross Ahead of the Fourth of July Weekend<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"440\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/06\/250626WSHBoxOffice.png\" alt=\"US box office gross: YTD through june 26 in billions\" class=\"wp-image-206023 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 711px; aspect-ratio: 711\/440;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Source: IMDbPro<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry continues to search for its next \u201cBarbenheimer\u201d moment\u2014two summers ago, ticket sales soared upon the simultaneous release of two studio juggernauts, Warner Bros. Pictures&#8217; (WBD) \u201cBarbie\u201d and Universal Pictures&#8217; (CMCSA) \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d The showdown between Greta Gerwig\u2019s and Christopher Nolan\u2019s hits began on July 21, in the deep heart of summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the fall, \u201cBarbie\u201d had grossed $1.445 billion worldwide, while \u201cOppenheimer\u201d produced $976 million in ticket sales, both far above their budgets of $145 million and $100 million, respectively.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, \u201cMission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning\u201d from Paramount Pictures (PARAA) wasn\u2019t Tom Cruise\u2019s best financial showing. The 2025 action movie has notched $180 million at the box office in its first five weeks.<sup>4<\/sup>&nbsp;Not abysmal, but it tracks well below what \u201cOppenheimer\u201d produced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2025-s-stars-and-themes\">2025\u2019s Stars and Themes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s domestic stars include the April 4 release of Warner Bros. Pictures\u2019 \u201cA Minecraft Movie\u201d at $424 million and the Memorial Day weekend debut of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures\u2019 \u201cLilo &amp; Stitch\u201d with $390 million, according to Box Office Mojo by IMDbPro data.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Universal\u2019s \u201cHow to Train Your Dragon\u201d is off to a fast start, registering $172 million in ticket sales in less than two weeks on screen. Holidays can be crucial\u2014Disney&#8217;s \u201cCaptain America: Brave New World,\u201d Marvel\u2019s first major release of the year, is No. 4 in 2025 with $200 million US gross after it hit the big screen over the Presidents\u2019 Day weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can we glean from the first six months of the calendar? Well, it seems nostalgia remains in vogue as audiences crave familiar brands. But horror and even some low-budget titles continue to thrive. What&#8217;s more, there may be box office momentum considering that January and February ticket sales were unusually low. Finally, we profiled the success of \u201cNe Zha 2\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wallstreethorizon.com\/blog\/Reel-Relief-Escaping-Economic-Angst-at-the-Movies\">last time<\/a>, and what\u2019s happening internationally can\u2019t be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grab-your-popcorn-upcoming-featured-attractions\">Grab Your Popcorn: Upcoming Featured Attractions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a domestic box office poised to print $4 billion by the Fourth of July weekend\u2014likely up 15% or more over the same period last year\u2014it&#8217;s been a solid first half, and a spate of potential blockbusters is in the queue. \u201cF1 The Movie\u201d was the first major summer test upon its full US release on June 27, and it was just the beginning. In mid-April, Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF) led the pack with 11 scheduled releases through the middle of the third quarter. In May, it separated into two companies, one for its Studio operations and the other dedicated to its STARZ business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Comcast steals the show with 12 titles under its Universal Studios banner. Namely, the health of the consumer. With a weakening jobs market and recession fears lingering, what happens at the macro level shouldn\u2019t be discounted. Moreover, so-called \u201csuperhero fatigue\u201d has set in to an extent, prompting Hollywood to step up its creative game.
