The price of a bar of gold hit a new all-time high on Friday as investors sought shelter from macroeconomic and geopolitical storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gold\u2019s price has shot up over 30% this year, which is remarkable considering the US economy has held up well and government bond<\/a> yields have remained high. If the US economy was tumbling toward a recession<\/a> and falling interest<\/a> rates were reducing the income of other assets, that could explain gold\u2019s price rising. But those things aren\u2019t happening, so it suggests investors are more nervous about the future than they\u2019re letting on. And maybe they\u2019re right to be: geopolitical tensions haven\u2019t exactly eased, the risk of high inflation<\/a> and a slowdown in growth still loom large, government debt is dangerously high, and central banks are stocking up on gold rather than greenbacks. The record price on these bricks is sending a message: uncertainty is brewing, so stay prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
