US Inflation Picks Up, Keeping Rate Cut Talks Alive

What’s going on here?

US consumer prices accelerated by 0.4% in August – their fastest monthly pace since January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What does this mean?

After months of cooling off, inflation in the US picked up more speed in August, rising faster than many expected. The annual inflation rate moved up to 2.9% from 2.7%, right in line with Wall Street forecasts, while core inflation – which leaves out food and energy – stayed steady at 3.1%. That shows underlying price pressures aren’t going away just yet, as businesses pass on higher costs to consumers across goods and services. Still, some economists think a softer job market could cool wage and spending growth, and that may help slow services inflation going forward. But for now, most market watchers believe a Federal Reserve rate cut is likely on the table this month, with the CME FedWatch tool giving it a 91% chance.

Why should I care?

For markets: All eyes are on the next Fed move.

Investors are closely watching the inflation numbers, balancing hopes for lower rates against the risk that sticky core inflation holds the Fed back. That’s led to increased volatility, especially in rate-sensitive sectors like tech and real estate, which tend to react quickly to changes in borrowing costs.

The bigger picture: Balancing inflation and jobs remains the Fed’s challenge.

The central bank faces a tricky balancing act: cut rates enough to support the job market, but not so much that inflation surges again. With wage growth and services inflation both showing signs of slowing, policymakers’ choices over the next few months will be crucial for the economy’s long-term health. How the Fed navigates shifting costs and expectations will set the tone for everyone from businesses to households.
